The fill <br />shall be free of any frozen lumps, wood or other organic material and shall have a plasticity <br />index less than 40 as determined by ASTM D 424. Type 10 material may be used as general <br />grading fill or backfill where specified in the West Pit Culvert, or in lieu of Material Type 2 for <br />the exterior berm/roadway. <br />6.12 Compaction <br />6.12.1 General <br />The Contractor shall provide sufficient compaction equipment of the types and sizes as is <br />necessary for the various fill materials specified. The Contractor will be allowed and is <br />encouraged to use fill transport equipment traffic to the greatest extent possible to achieve the <br />required level of compaction, although compaction equipment that produce excessive vertical or <br />horizontal earth pressures, which may cause excessive damage or displacement to facilities, shall <br />not be used. <br />6.12.2 Fill Materials <br />Material Types 1 or 2 shall be used as backfill material around [he Wes[ Pit Culvert.
