DATTLE MOUNTAIN RESOURCES Page 6-2
San Luis Project Technical Specifications
gradations of hvo materials are not compatible, in [he opinion of the Designer, [he Contractor
shall place and compact, as specified, not less than two feet of material of an intermediate
gradation between the incompatible materials.
If, in the opinion of the Designer, [he surface of any layer of the fill is too dry of too smooth to
bond properly with the layer of material to be placed thereon, it shall be moistened and/or
worked with a harrow, scarifier, or other equipment to provide a satisfactory bonding surface
before the next layer of fill material is placed. If, in the opinion of the Designer, the prepared
surface is too wet for proper compaction of the fill material to be placed thereon, it shall be
removed and allowed to dry or shall be worked with a harrow, scarifier, or other equipment to
reduce the moisture content to the required amount as directed by the Designer, and then
compacted before the next layer of fill material is placed.
Riprap shall be placed in a mazmer which will avoid segregation and accumulation of the lazger
or smaller stone sizes. Riprap placement shall include final grading to result in a relatively
uniform surface free of stones which protrude significantly above adjacent stones and meets the
approval of the Designer.
When competent bedrock is encountered in spillway excavations, the channel lining material
specified may be omitted. Adjacent channel segments shall be constructed such that a smooth
transition into and out of the bedrock lined section is created. This work shall be closely
supervised by and must meet the approval of the Designer.
Unless otherwise approved by the Designer, the slope of rock against which compacted fill is to
be placed shall not be steeper that 1 H:1 V and no steeper than 2H:1 V in the case: of foundation
soil surfaces.
6.2 Material Type 1 -Compacted Backfill
The Contractor shall furnish, transport and place Type 1 material as set forth in the
Specifications, the Drawings, or as directed by the Designer.
Material Type 1 will be used as bedding and structural backfill for the culvert a[ the West Pit.
The material shall have low plasticity, plasticity index not exceeding 6 as determined by ASTM
D 424 and liquid limit not exceeding 35 as determined by ASTM D 423. The material may be
obtained from borrow pits or excavations on site or imported. Type 1 backfill shall meet the
following gradation requirements:
N:\DHALLMANISANLUIS\SANLUIS.DOC 6-2 SRK Proieci NO. 14732
