BATTLE MOUNTAIN RESOURCES Page 6-I
San Luis Project Technical Soea fications
6.0 FILL MATERIALS
6.1 General
The backfill, slopes, impoundment area grading plans, spillways, access roads, and other
appurtenant facilities incorporate different types of fill material as specified herein. Fill materials
shall be obtained from approved sites and local borrow areas or imported. Ripralr shall be either
obtained from borrow areas located on site, produced in the vicinity of the sill: or imported.
Selective borrowing or processing of materials maybe required.
No fill materials shall be placed until the subgrade preparations, within the aze<i of placement,
have been completed and approved by the Designer. Subsequent placement of fill shall be made
only in areas approved by the Designer. Placement of the fill shall be done t~> the lines and
grades shown on the Drawings.
Fill shall be placed in near horizontal lifts unless otherwise approved by the Designer. Riprap
may be placed pazallel to slopes. Fill placement procedures and equipment shall be organized
and suitable for constructing a relatively uniform fill, meeting minimum density and/or
compactive effort requirements, as specified. With the exception of riprap, fill surfaces shall be
graded to drain as materials are placed and fill of one type shall not be placed more than one lift
in advance of an abutting fill material of a different type. The Contractor shall dewater or
provide drainage for ponded water conditions in fill aeeas.
The procedures for the construction using fill materials shall be discussed with, and approved by,
the Designer prior to placement. Placement of all fill materials shall include benching or keying-
inprocedures as directed by the Designer to provide for bonding between old and crew fill as well
as fill to natural material.
Fill shall be of inorganic soil or rock materials. The suitability of all materials intended for use
in fill construction shall be subject to approval by the Designer. Except as othetw se specified or
approved by the Designer, fill materials shall be placed on moist surfaces.
The distribution of materials within any given zone shall be such that the fill is free from lenses,
pockets, streaks, or layers of materials differing substantially in texture or gradation from the
surrounding material. The combined borrow excavation and fill placement operation shall be
such that the materials, when placed within the fill areas, shall be blended sufficiently to secure
the best practicable distribution of material, subject to [he approval of the Designer.
