t'
Table 1 B. Definition of Natural Heritage State Rarity Ranks
These ranks should not be interpreted as legal designations.
Stale rank (S): Based on the status of a species in an individual state. S ranks may differ among slates based
on the relative abundance of a species in each state. Species or plan[ communities that rank 51 co 53 are --
considered imperiled or vulnerable and the status and locations of each are closely monitored. Species or
plan[ communities [hat are ranked 54 or SS are no[ ac[ively monitored, except that the locations of the best
examples of all plant communities are monitored. The sra[us of all elemenu is reviewed annually.
S1 Cri[icaily imperiled in state because of extreme rarity (5 or fewer occurrences, or
very few remaining individuals), or because of some fac[or of its biology making is especially
vulnerable to extirpation from the stale.
S2 Imperiled in stale because of rarity (6 to 20 occurrences), or because of o[her
factors demonsvably making it very vulnerable to extirpation from the s[a[e.
53 Vulnerable in state (21 to 100 occurrences).
5354 Wa[chlisted. Specific occurrence da[a are collected and periodically
analyzed to determine whether more active vacking is warranted. Watchlisced species are
indicated in this document with "•".
S4 Apparently secure in the stale. Only high quality examples of native plant
communities of [his ranking are actively [racked.
S5 Demons[rably secure in [he state. Only high quality examples of naive plan[
communities of [his ranking are actively [racked.
Stt6 Refers to the breeding season imperilment of elements that are no[ permanent
residents.
S~YN Refers [o the non•breeding season imperilmen[ of elements that are no[ permanent
residents. Where no consisren[ loca[ion can be discerned for migrants or non-breeding
populations, a rank of SZN is used.
SZ Migrant whose occurrences are too irregular, rransi[ory, and/or dispersed to be
reliably identified, mapped, and protected.
SH His[orically known from the state, but not verified for an ex[ended period, usually
> 15 years; [his rank is used primarily when Inventory has been at[empted recen[ly.
SX Presumed extirpated from the scare.
. _ Sli? Indicates uncertainty about an assigned slate rank.
SU :. Unab{e to assign rarity rank, often because of low search effott or cryptic nature of _ . _
the element.
5A Accidental in [he state.
SR Reported co occur in the state, bu[ unverified.
5? Unranked. Some evidence tha[ species may be Imperiled, bu[ awaiting formal rarity
ranking.
