Table 1 B. Definition of Natural Heritage State Rarity Ranks
These ranks should not be interpreted as legal designations.
Stale rank (S): Based on [he status of a species in an individual slate. 5 ranks may differ among slates based
on the relative abundance of a species in each state. Species or plan[ communities that rank S 1 co 53 are
considered imperiled or vulnerable and the s[acus and locations of each are closely moni[ored. Species or
plant communities [hat are ranked S? or SS are not actively moni[ored, except chat the locations of the best
examples of a!I plant communities are moni[ored. The status of all elemenu is reviewed annually.
S 1 Critically imperiled in state because of extreme rarity (5 or fewer occurrences, or
very few remaining individuals), or because of some factor of its biology making i[ especially
vulnerable [o extirpation from the state.
S2 Imperiled in stale because of rarityy (6 to 20 occurrences), or because of ocher
factors demonsvably making it very vulnerable [o extirpation from the state.
S3 Vulnerable in state (21 to 100 occurrences).
5354 Wacchlisced. Specific occurrence data are collected and periodically
analyzed [o decennine whether more active tracking is warranted. Wa[chlisted species are
indicated in [his document with "•".
S4 Apparently secure in [he slate. Only high quality examples of native plant
communities of this ranking are actively [racked.
SS Demonstrably secure in tite state. Only high quality examples of naive plan[
communities of this ranking are actively vacked.
Sli6 Refers co the breeding season imperilment of elements chat are not permanent
residents.
SAN Refers [o [he non•breeding season imperilmen[ of elements chat are not permanent
residents. Where no consis[enc location can be discerned for migrants or non breeding
populations, a rank of SZN is used.
SZ Migrant whose occurrences are loo irregular, transitory, and/or dispersed to be
reliably identified, mapped, and pro[ecced.
SH Historically known from the state, but no[ verified for an extended period, usually
> 15 years; [his rank is used primarily when inven[ory has been a[temp[ed recently.
SX Presumed extirpated from the state.
Sif? Indicates uncertainty about an assigned scare rank.
SU :. Unable co assign rarity rank, open because of low search effort or cryptic nature of _
the element.
SA Accidental in the state.
SR Reported to occur in the state, bu[ unverified.
S? Unranked. Some evidence [hat species may be imperiled, bu[ awaiting formal rarity
ranking.
