4.4.3 Stockpile Area C. This area covers about 2.5 acres in the
southwestern part of sec. 8 and is oriented approximately north- •
south.
Rock Type. Sandstone is the predominant bedrock underlying
this site. TH-17 was drilled on the eastern side of this area and
encountered clay from the surface to 7.5 feet, sandstone from 7.5
feet to 17.5 feet and claystone to 20 feet, the total depth of the
hole.
Structure. This location is only a few hundred feet east of
the general axis of the Fish Creek anticline. The rocks strike
about east-west and dip between 15° and 25° N.
Topographv and Drainage. This site is oriented north-south
approximately parallel to the contours. The topographic surface
slopes at about 24& (~4:1) toward the east into the main drainage
from the mine.
Comments and Evaluation. This area is on a fairly steep slope
and it is questionable that bedrock will be encountered in site
preparation. Benches or keyways should be oriented essentially
parallel to the topographic contour and graded so that water does
not oversaturate the topsoil pile.
4.4.4 Stockpile Area D. This area is along the line between secs.
8 and 17, mainly in the latter section. The site is roughly
oriented east-west and covers about four acres.
Rock Tvpe. The predominant rock type underlying this site is
sandstone. In the southern part of the area, adjacent to the ridge
crest, bedrock may be close to or at the surface.
•
30
