Geologic conditions along the entire alignment are amenable to
•
the design, construction, and maintenance of the proposed haul
road. The area through which the alignment passes is free of
landslides and related types of geologic hazards. Rockfall could
be a man-induced geologic hazard where the alignment includes
relatively deep side-hill or through-cuts; however, conventional
techniques of slope control can stabilize any potential rockfalls.
Groundwater does not appear to be a potential hazard, and surface
water should not cause a hazard with engineered drainage plans that
provide for rapid water removal from cuts and fills. Erosion
control will be an important aspect of construction and post-
construction maintenance. Generally erosion is reduced in cuts
made through soft rocks such as shale and siltstone by steepening
slopes up to about 1:1 where permissible. •
The embankment for the sedimentation pond is located about
1200 feet from the mouth of the canyon in which the mine is
planned. Excavation for the right abutment will likely reach
claystone; in the left abutment clay, and possibly sandstone will
be reached. Cutoff probably can be achieved in claystone at the
right abutment, and possibly at the left abutment although there is
a possibility of finding sandstone. The only test holes with which
to evaluate embankment foundation conditions are located 100-300
feet upstream from the embankment centerline.
The eight topsoil storage areas do not present any unusual
geologic problems. The geology at each of these sites can be
utilized to reduce the potential for ground failure.
•
6
