Pa` 5
June 18, 1985
Daniels Pit 2
C. Farrell
D. Colorado Division of Highways - This operation predates the
presence of Academy Boulevard. Many years ago Academy ended at Drennan
Road. Then the highway was extended southward to connect with
Interstate 25 and in the process split the operation into a west and
east section. In the process of building the highway they had to cut
deeply into the terrace structure forming the sand deposit. This
produced the very high and steep walls on Academy at this location.
Maintenance problems on the highway have been difficult as a result
of the high and steep slopes. One of the purposes of the amendment is
to provide a means to reduce these slopes so as to create a more easily
maintained roadway. Therefore, the effects of this amendment on that
structure will be to improve the rather difficult situation of erosion
off of the roadsides and onto the highway. A berm of approximately 12
feet will be left along the highway and therefore functionally the
operation will have no more effect than it currently does. But by
lowering the road cuts to 12 feet it will improve the highway situation
and if anything reduce the adverse effects on the road.
In conclusion, there are no adverse impacts on the roadway. The
plans included in this amendment, at the very least, will have no change
on the highway integrity and in all probability will improve the
integrity of the roadway by reducing maintenance problems that are a
real headache to the Highway Department as well as unnecessarily
expensive to the taxpayers.
E. Power Line - The powerline which extends along the east side of
Academy Boulevard is a major line. The footings for the support poles
extend as far into the ground as the poles are above ground. The only
way the stability of Chese poles can be affected would be by excavating
well below the level of the poles immediately adjacent to them. All
excavations along the powerline will start at the level of the base of ~-- ~
the poles and at least twenty five feet east of the poles. It will then \
extend downward along a 3:1 slope. Therefore, the base of a 60 foot
slope would be about 200' from the vertical line delineating the
power pole and its underground support.
Furthermore, these poles, as shown on the maps, are double poles.
If they were single poles then we would have to stay much further from
the base with our extraction, but the fact that they are double poles
provides much greater stability and security.
1 It is also important to point out that the condition to be created
by mining to the east of the powerline is somewhat similar to the
situation below and west of the powerline. A steep slope decends from
the powerline down to Academy Boulevard. This slope is much steeper
than the one that will be produced by Daniel's Sand. No problems have
occurred with respect to stability on the highway side and because the
slope produced by Daniel's Sand will be even less steep, the possible
adverse effects on the powerline stability will be even less than those
produced by Academy Boulevard.
