<br /> <br />7/es <br />C By--Boyle very gravelly sandy loam, warm, 10 to 40 percent slopes. <br />This shallow, well drained soil is on mountainsides and upland hills. It <br />formed in residuum derived dominantly from gneiss and granite. The native <br />vegetation is mainly pinyon and juniper. Elevation is 7,200 to 8,500 fee[. <br />The average annual precipitation is 14 to 18 inches, the average annual air <br />temperature is 43 [0 47 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 85 <br />to 110 days. <br />Typically, th//e~~surface layer is very dark grayish brown very gravelly <br />sandy loam about/b/inches thick. The subsoil is extremely gravelly sandy <br />clay loam about 11 inches thick. Soft gneiss is at a depth of 17 inches. <br />The soil is neutral. <br />Included in this unit is about 5 percent deep Bronell very gravelly loam <br />~, on foot slopes and S percent deep Jodero sandy loam in drainageways. The <br />Jodero soil is less gravelly than this Boyle soil. Also included is about 5 <br />percent Rock outcrop on upper parts of side slopes and ridges. <br />Permeability of this Boyle soil is moderate. Available water capacity <br />is very low. Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 inches. Runoff is rapid, <br />and the hazard of water erosion is high to very high. <br />This unit is used for noncommercial woodland, wildlife habitat and <br />livestock grazing. Slope limits access by livestock and results in <br />overgrazing of the less sloping areas. <br />The potential plant community is mainly pinyon and juniper and an <br />underatory of Indian ricegrass, mountain muhly, needleandthread, blue grama, <br />and Gambel oak. If the condition of the underatory deteriorates, threeawn, <br />blue grama, prickly pear and yucca increase. The potential production of <br />/ the native underatory vegetation in normal years is about 400 pounds of <br />~ air-dry vegetation per acre. <br />
