<br /> <br />( Woodland products such as firewood, fence posts, Christmas trees, and • <br />\- <br />pinyon nuts <br />are produced <br />on this unit. <br />However, in <br />some areas <br />steepness of . <br />slope limits access for removal of these products. The use of tree spades <br />for removal of transplants is severely limited. The site index for <br />pinyon-juniper ranges from 20 to 60. <br />Thinning the overstory generally enhances reproduction and promotes [he <br />growth of grass and younger trees. To reduce [he hazard of erosion and <br />increase grass production, grasses should be seeded following thinning or <br />harvesting of pinyon and juniper. Grazing in harvested areas should be <br />deferred for a[ least 2 years to assure development of sufficient plant <br />cover [o protect the soil from erosion. <br />This unit is poorly suited to homesi[e development.
