Woodland products such as firewood, Eence posts, Christmas trees, and
pinyon nuts are produced on [his unit. However, in some areas steepness of
slope limits access for removal of these products. The use of tree spades
for removal of transplants is severely limited. The site index for
pinyon-juniper ranges from 20 to 60.
Thinning the overstory generally enhances reproduction and promotes the
growth of grass and younger trees. To reduce the hazard of erosion and
increase grass production, grasses should be seeded following thinning or
harvesting of pinyon and juniper. Grazing in harvested areas should be
deferred for at Least 2 years to assure development of sufficient plant
cover to protect the soil from erosion.
This unit is poorly suited to homesite development. The main
limitations are steepness of slope and shallow depth to bedrock.
This map unit is in capability subclass VIIe, nonirrigated. It is in
the Pinyon-Juniper woodland site.

C.
1
