Letter of Objection &~. Conc~"Line Camp Gravel PiP' (Application #: M-2001)
Thursday, March 01, 2001 -Page: 3
(The Akin Homestead is in the background in the shadow of the mountainside)
Exhibit B Shows an aerial photo of this site
The proposed gravel pit will adversely affect the primary domestic
aquifer in the Dolores River Valley: The primary aquifer which
supplies the domestic water supply in the Dolores River Valley is
extremely shallow at the point of the proposed gravel pit.
The mining operations will invade the primary aquifer. We believe this
poses a substantial threat to natural resources and health for three
reasons:
1. The toxins which may spread through the aquifer, when the
gravel pit excavations intrude on it, are substantial; they present
a health risk to the users of the domestic water supply.
2. The gravel pit operations are in a flood plain. Even at the lowest
seasonal level of the Dolores River, the toxins disturbed from the
gravel operations will be within less than 100 feet of the River.
During the flood season, the Dolores River has the capacity of
carrying disturbed toxins all the way from the gravel pit to the
McPhee reservoir.
Four States Aggregates, LLC 01 MAR 2001
Letter of Objection & Concern: Line Camp Pit FSA-LCP-D1-001
Figure 1 -the site of the line camp gravel pit as it appears today
