• is good for cattle and sheep. Energy retention is fair and protein poor.
This introduced species is a valuable revegetation tool when planted in low percentages
and a less aggressive variety is chosen for use. It ie capable of contributing desirable food end
cover for wildlife and excellent forage for domestic livestock. Excellent erosion control can be
obtained using this grass. The species is currently widespread in Routt County and Colorado
and is compatible with the flora and fauna of the region. This plant is not poisonous or noxious.
SPIKE MUHLY: MUHLENBERGIA WRIGHTII VASEY
Spike Muhly is anon-weedy, native perennial tufted bunch grass preferring dry sites
between 5,000 and 9,600 feek It is neither poisonous nor weedy. Reproduction is accomplished
sexually. Growth of this species on sandy loam, loam end clay loam is good. Gentle to moder-
ate slopes are more conducive to growth than steep ones. Erosion control potential is medium.
Establishment requirements are low to medium. Short and long term revegetation potentials
are low. Potential biomass production is low. Fair cover is produced for game birds, small
non-game birds and small mammals. Food value is fair for these three classes of wildlife
also.
• STREAMBANK WHEATGRASS: AGROPYRON RIPARIUM SCRIBN. & SMITH
Streambank wheatgrass ie a native perennial preferring moist sites and ranges in ele-
vation from 5,400 to 9,500 feet. It reproduces sexually and vegetatively with rhizomes. This
plant isn't weedy or poisonous. Growth on sandy loam, loam and clay loam is good. It is
healthiest on gentle slopes and fares poorly on steep ones. Streambank wheatgrase has high
erosion control potential due to its rhizomatous nature. Medium establishment requirements
render the short term revegetation potentials of this grass as medium. However, long term
revegetation potential is high. Biomass production is rated medium. Game birds, small non-
game birds and small mammals find fair cover in this grass. Food value for all five classes of
wildlife is fair. Forage palatability for cattle is good and sheep fair. Energy value is fair and
protein poor.
•
4.4-B-12
