• SIDEOATS GRAMA: BOUTELOUA CURTIPENDULA (MICHX.) TORR.
This native grass grows between 3,500 and 7,500 feet in the state and is reported as
presently growing in the Moffat Area by the Soil Inventory report. It does well in dry sites,
reproducing both vegetatively and apomictically. Sideoata grams is rated high in poten-
tial biomass production growing well on gentle, moderate and steep slopes. It isn't weedy
or poisonous. Growth of sideoats grams on the soil reconstruction materials in the Moffat
Area is rated as good. Erosion control potential for this grass is high. Its medium estab-
lishment requirements give this species a low rating in short term revegetation potential.
Once established, it does well and ie rated high for long term revegetation potential. Fair
cover ie provided by this grass for game birds and small mammals. Cattle and sheep for-
age palatability are both rated good. Energy value and protein value of this species is fair.
SLENDER WHEATGRASS: AGROPYRON TRACHYCAULUM (LINK) MALTE
This non-weedy, perennial native is found in Colorado between 4,000 and 12,500 feet in
dry-moist sites. Reproduction is solely sexual in this non-poisonous plant. Growth on sandy
• loam, loam and clay loam is good. This plant does fair on steep slopes and good on moderate to
gentle ones. Erosion control for this bunch grass is rated medium and it has minimum estab-
lishment requirements. Short and long term revegetation potentials are medium. Medium
biomass production may be expected from this species. Fair cover for game birds, small non-
game birds and small mammals; and fair food value for all five classes of wildlife may be
provided by slender wheatgrass. Forage palatability for cattle is good and sheep fair.
Retention ratings for energy and protein are fair and poor, respectively.
SMOOTH BROME: BROMUS INERMIS LEYSS
This Eurasian introduction is found in dry-moist sites from 4,500 to 10,000 feet. It is not
poisonous and is non-weedy. Reproduction occurs sexually and vegetatively by rhizomes.
Smooth brome is an indicator of mechanical disturbance. Growth of this grass in sandy loam,
loam and clay loam on gentle to moderate slopes is good and fair on steep slopes. Its erosion
control potential is high due in part to the species rhizomatous habit. Establishment require-
ments for this grass are low. The short term revegetation potential for this grass is medium and
for long term purposes the potential ie highly rated. The species is characterized by high poten-
• tial biomass production. Good cover is produced for game birds, small non-game birds and
small wildlife is fair.
