• TALL FESCUE: FESTUCA ARUNDINACEA (SCREB.) CELAK
This is a European introduction. Tall fescue prefers moist sites from 4,800 to 8,700 feet
in Colorado. Reproduction is accomplished sexually and vegetatively. The P.I.N. data bank
classifies it as an economic weed. Tall fescue is a minor poisoner of livestock. (See hard fes-
cue for poisonous factor).
Growth in sandy loam, loam and clay loam on gentle slopes is good. Poor growth is ob-
tained on moderate to steep slopes. Erosion control for this fescue is potentially high.
Establishment requirements are low and the short and long term revegetation potentials are
medium and high respectively. Potential biomass production is high. Forage palatability for
cattle is good and for sheep fair. Energy retention values are fair and protein poor.
THICKSPIKE WHEATGRASS: AGROPYRON DASYSTACHUM (HOOK) SCRIBN.
This wheatgraes is a native, non-weedy perennial that prefers dry habitats and
ranges from 4,800 to 10,000 feet in Colorado. Reproduction occurs sexually and vegeta-
tively by rhizomes. Growth of thickspike on sandy loam and loam is good and on clay
• loam is fair. This species exhibits the best growth on gentle and moderate slopes. The ero-
sion control potential is high. Establishment requiremena for this plant are medium.
Short term revegetation potential is medium and long term is high. Potential biomass pro-
duction is rated medium. Fair cover ie provided for game birds, small non-game birds
and small mammals. Elk, game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals ob-
tain fair food value from thickspike wheatgrasa. Forage palatability for cattle is good and
sheep is fair. Energy and protein value retention are fair.
TIMOTHY: PHLEUM PRATENSE L.
Timothy is a European introduction that grows from 4,500 to 11,500 feet in Colorado
in moist sites. It reproduces sexually and in terms of weediness is classified as a colo-
nizer. This species isn't poisonous. Growth potential goes from good to poor as slopes in-
crease from gentle to steep. This grass has a medium rating for erosion control potential.
Establishment requirements are also medium. It is highly rated for its short term revege-
tation potential. The long term revegetation potential of this plant is medium. Potential
biomass production is classified as medium. Fair cover is produced for deer and game
• birds. Good cover for small mammals and non-game birds is produced. Good food value
is obtained by small non-game birds and the other four categories of wildlife procure fair
4.4-B-13
