• BLUEBUNCH WHEATGRASS: AGROPYRON SPICATUM
Bluebunch wheatgrasa is a native perennial that prefera dry-moist sites. It is nei-
ther weedy nor poisonous. This wheatgrasa ranges from 4,500 to 8,500 feet in Colorado.
Growth of this grass in sandy loam and clay loam on moderate to steep slopes is good and
fair on gentle slopes. Erosion control potential is medium. Establishment requirements
are medium. The short term revegetation potential is low and the long term potential high.
Medium biomass production may be expected. Good cover for small mammals and fair
cover for game birds and small non-game birds is provided. Good food value is produced
for elk and fair food value for deer, game birds, small non-game birds and small mam-
mals. Cattle and sheep forage palatability is good. Energy retention is fair and protein
poor.
BLUE GRAMA: BOUTELOUA GRACILIS (H.B.K) LAG.
Blue grams is a native grass growing between 3,500 and 10,500 feet in dry range-
land areas. This perennial grass reproduces vegetatively, sexually and asexually. It is
• non-weedy. Blue grams may, under unusual conditions, be a minor poisonous plant (See
definitions of "poisonous -livestock"). This species grows well on all soils present in the
Moffat Area. Growth on gentle to moderate slopes is good. Erosion control potential of blue
grams is rated high. Its establishment requirements are medium with a low short term
revegetation potential. Long term revegetation potential for this grass is high. Potential
biomass production is rated medium. It provides non-game birds and small mammals
with fair cover. Food value for game birds, non-game birds and small mammals is fair.
Cattle and sheep forage palatability ie rated good with energy and protein values being
fair.
GALLETA: HILARIA JAMESII (YORK) BENTH.
Galleta is a native grass that prefera dry sites between 3,600 and 10,800 feet. It re-
produces sexually and vegetatively by rhizomes. It is not poisonous or weedy. Growth of
galleta on sandy loam and loam is good and is fair on clay loams. Gentle slopes produce
the healthiest plants and growth deteriorates to a poor rating on steep slopes. Erosion con-
trol potential for this species is high. It is a difficult grass to establish, making its short
term revegetative potential low to medium depending on site. Once established, galleta
• grows well and is medium to high in terms of potential as a species for long term revegeta-
4.4-B-5
