• growth is rated u good for the type of topsoil reconstructive material to be used in the Moffat
Area. It prefers gentle and moderate slopes, but does fair in steep areas. It's erosion con-
trol potential is high. Arizona fescue's establishment requirements are medium. The
short term revegetation potential is also medium. The long term revegetation potential is
high. It's growth habit provides fair cover for game birds and good cover for small mam-
male and non-game birds. Small mammal, small non-game bird, elk and deer food
value is fair. Forage palatability for cattle is good and for sheep fair. Energy retention is
rated fair and protein poor.
BEARDLESS WHEATGRASS: AGROPYRON SPICATUM INERME
This is a native perennial bunch grass that does well in dry-moist sites. This
species is non-weedy and not poisonous. It ranges in the state from 4,500 to 8,500 feet.
Growth of this wheatgrasa in sandy loam, loam and clay loam on gentle to moderate slopes
is good. On steep slopes it ie fair. Erosion contro] potential is medium. Establishment re-
quirements are medium. The short term revegetation potential is low and the long term
high. The potential biomass production of this grass is also high. Good cover is provided
• for game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals by beardless wheatgrasa.
Food value for elk, game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals is good. For
deer, food value is fair. Forage palatability for cattle is good and sheep fair. Protein reten-
tion is poor and energy retention is good.
BIG BLUEGRASS: POA AMPLA MERR.
This native species grows in Colorado between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. It is a peren-
nial bunchgrass that reproduces sexually. It is not weedy or poisonous. Big bluegrass
grows best in dry-moist sites. Growth on clay loam, loam and sandy loam is good. This
plant grows best on gentle and moderate slopes and is rated medium in its ability to control
erosion. Establishment requirements for big bluegrass are medium. Short term revegeta-
tion potential is medium and long term revegetation potential is high. This grass biomass
production is rated medium. It provides good cover for game birds, small non-game birds,
and small mammals. Food value of big bluegrass is fair for all classes of wildlife present
at the Edna Mine. Cattle and sheet forage palatability is good. Energy value is rated fair
and protein value poor.
•
4.4-B-4
