• tion goals. Potential biomass production is rated medium. In terms of cover, Galleta is
rated fair for small non-game birds and good for smell mammals. It is fair in food value
for elk and small mammals. Cattle and sheep forage palatability is fair. The energy
value of this species is fair and the protein value poor.
GREEN BASIN WILDRYE: ELYMUS CINEREUS SCRIBN. & MERR.
This wildrye is a non-weedy native perennial preferring dry-moist sites ranging
from 4,600 to 10,000 feet. It is not poisonous. Good growth is produced on sandy loam, loam
and clay loam. Growth is good on gentle and moderate slopes and fair on steep slopes.
This plant is highly rated for erosion control and is rated medium for establishment re-
quirements. Short term revegetation potential is low and long term is high. Potential
biomass production of great basin wildrye is high. Fair cover for elk and deer and good
cover for game birds, small mammals, and non-game birds is provided by this plant.
Forage for elk, game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals is fair. Cattle
and sheep forage palatability for this species is fair. Energy value retention is good and
protein fair.
• GREEN NEEDLEGRASS: STIPA VIRIDULA TRIN.
Green needlegrass is a non-weedy native, perennial clump grass. It ranges from
3,500 to 10,000 feet in Colorado. This species can result in mechanical poisoning of live-
stock when eaten in sufficient quantities. The barbed awns of this plant may lodge in the
oral tissue of grazing animals which results in ulcerations. Horses are more susceptible
due to the softer nature of the oral tissues. Green needlegrass may be a problem on dry
ranges where it comprises a large percentage of the grass present. Growth on sandy loam
is fair and on loam and clay loam good. Good growth is obtained on gentle and moderate
slopes. Steep slopes produce the poorest growth. Establishment requirements and erosion
control potential are rated medium. Short term revegetation potential is low due to the
greater difficulty in establishing this species. Long term revegetetion potential is high.
This species is rated medium in potential biomass production. It is fair as a cover for
game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals. Elk, deer and game bird food
value is fair. Small mammal and non-game bird food value is considered good. Forage
palatability for cattle is good and sheep fair. Energy and protein values are fair.
•
4.4-B-6
