Page 2
Mr. Don Kriz
December 18, 1979
6. Topsoil stockpiles should be clearly labeled.

7. Perhaps a clearer i7.lustration of the mining plan, showing phases
or same selected contours during mining.
Exhibit D:
1. To what adjacent pit area will the water from active pit dewatering
be pumped? This pit area should be considered ea part of the affected
lands.
2. The overall plan should tie in closely with the illustrations of
Exhibit C.
3. Is there a tested depth to shale? Is it usually more or less than
25 feet?
4. What provisions are to be made for the protection of the gas line
running along the western edge of the Chambers Pit area?
5. Topsoil stockpiles should be planted with a perennial grass cover
such as Western wheatgrass for adequate stabilization.
Exhibit E:
1. The seed mixture planned for both the Chambers and Rifle Pit areas
should be more diverse and should include a nitrogen fixer. The
staff recommends the following mixture:
Western wheatgrass
TaI1 wheatgrass
Russian wildrye
Alkali eacaton
Yellow sweetclover
- 3 ~~bs. P.L.S./acre
- 3 lbs. P.L.S./acre
- 2 lbs. P.L.S./acre
- .1 lta• P.L.S./acre
- .5 lb. P.L.S./acre
The seeding rates should be doubled if broadcast.
2. With a precipitation rate as low as 11.2 inches per year, all seeded
areas should also be mulched such that soil moisture aey be better
retained.
3. The planned 3:1 slope to the water level in the pit should be maintained
to 10 feet below the expected water level. (Reference Rule 6.1 f..)
This should Ue true for all shores in both the Rifle and Chambers Pit
areas.
Exhibit F:
1. A topographic map is again needed to show final contours of the
reclaimed areas and expected water levels in the nits. The contour
lines on this maP will help to indicate probablE drainage patterns
