4/87 <br />• Las Animas series. <br />The Las Animas series consists of deep, poorly and somewhat <br />poorly drained soils on stream terraces. These soils formed in <br />alluvium. Slope is 0 to 1 percent. Average annual precipitation is <br />1~~ to 15 inches, and average annual air temperature is 51 to 53 <br />degrees F. <br />These soils are coarse-loamy, mixed (calcareous), mesic Typic <br />Fluvaquents. <br />Typical pedon of Las Animas loam, 0 to 1 percent slopes, about <br />1,200 feet north and 1,300 feet east of the southwest corner of Sec. <br />5, T. 33 S., R. 63 W. <br />A--O tip 3 inches; dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2) Inam, very dark <br />grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly <br />hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; calcareous; moderately <br />alkaline; clear smooth boundary. <br />C1--3 to 11 inches; grayish brown (lOYR 5/2) fine sandy loam, <br />dark gray and dark grayish brown (SOYR 4/1 and lOYR 4/2) moist; common <br />fine distinct dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/6) mottles; moderately <br />medium platy structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and <br />nonplastic; calcareous; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. <br />• C2--il to 23 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) stratified sandy loam and <br />fine sandy laam, dart: brown (lOYR 4/3) moist; many medium distinct <br />dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/G) and dark gray (N 4/0) mottles; weak <br />fine platy structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; <br />calcareous; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. <br />C3--23 to 26 inches; gray (lOYR 5/1> silt loam, very dark gray <br />(lOYR 3/1) moist; common medium distinct dark yellowish brown (SOYR <br />4/6) mottles; moderate medium platy structure; slightly hard, friable, <br />slightly sticky and slightly plastic; calcareous; moderately alkaline; <br />abrupt wavy boundary. <br />C4--26 to 36 inches; gray (lOYR 5/i) loamy sand, dark gray <10YR <br />4/1> moist; common fine distinct dark yellowish brown (30YR 4/6) <br />mottles; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; mildly <br />alkaline; clear wavy boundary. <br />G5--36 to 60 inches; pale brawn (lOYR 6/3) sand, brown (10YR <br />4/3) moist; many fine distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) mottles; <br />massive;lonse,nonsticky and nonplastic;lU percent gravel mildly <br />alkaline. <br />Pedr-ock is at a depth of 60 inches or more. The water table is <br />usually at a depth of 12 to 36 inches. Lime is at a depth of 0 to 10 <br />. inches. Reaction is mildly alkaline or moderately alkaline throughout <br />the profile. <br />A horizon: Texture is loam, fine sandy loam, ar loamy fine sand. <br />C horizon: Texture is stratified fine sandy loam, sandy loam, <br />Inamy sand, sand, or silt loam. Glay content is 3 to 16 percent. <br />
