4.3 Erosion and Sediment Controls
The site access point will be paved to prevent carrying dirt and materials onto the county road.
The interior haul routes will be stabilized by water applications for the life of the mine. The
routes outside the active mining azea will be revegetated or maintained as access for the future
lakes.
Stockpiles have the potential for releasing sediment to stormwaters. Topsoil and overburden
material generally is kept so that a reserve is available for the anticipated use during the current
yeaz. This practice minimizes the amount of disturbed ground surface, which would be
susceptible to erosion by stormwater runoff. All topsoil and/or overburden stockpiles will be
seeded with a fast growing cover crop to protect them from wind and water erosion, in the event
they aze to be left undisturbed for more than one growing season. The stockpiles will also have
erosion control ditches cut at the base to prevent the transport of sediment. A detail of the ditch
is included at the end of this narrative.
Revegetation of disturbed azeas remains the most efficient and economical Best Management
Practice (BMP) for reducing sediment transport from lazge azeas. Roots hold soils in place and
surface growth filters sediment and reduces runoff velocities causing deposition of suspended
soil particles.
Reclamation and vegetating disturbed areas will be an ongoing process to reduce soil erosion at
the site. Revegetated azeas will be mulched following seeding to prevent erosion prior to the
establishment of the plants.
Mowing will provide the predominant form of weed control and appropriate chemicals will only
be used to control particulazly hazdy vazieties of weeds. Any weed killers used must be
compatible with use neaz waterways. For example, Roundup should not be used neaz running
water.
4.4 Inspection and Maintenance
Preventative inspections for the vehicles located on site will occur on a daily basis. All vehicles
will be checked for signs of leaks or other potential problems. Any problems identified will be
corrected immediately. Monthly monitoring inspections of the vehicles will be conducted and
documented on the attached forms. Preventative maintenance for all the equipment will be
conducted on a regulaz basis and documented on the same forms.
Preventative inspections for the crushing and screening equipment and the asphalt plant and
concrete plant will be conducted on a monthly basis. Any information regarding maintenance
needed or performed will be noted on the attached forms.
4
