Revised Jan. 16, 1985
3.1 FAN SITE
The fan site will be of a minimum size necessary to allow for the
installation and infrequent access to the fan. The fan will be placed on
a reinforced concrete pad. The fan itself will be offset from the mine
opening a minimum of 15.0 feet as required by 30 CFR Section 75.300-2b of
the MS HA Regulations. Due to space limitations, the fan will be an upcast
design. See Appendix 6. The fan will be attached to the portal by a
steel duct transition section equipped with explosion doors. The
transition section will attach to a concrete entrance liner which will be
reinforced, formed and poured.
• Earthwork to be performed at the fan pad site (see Drawing SGF-OS) will be
minimal. The existing fan pad as shown in the drawing will not be changed
with the exception of minor grading and excavation for the fan foundation
and footers. Cut and/or fill will be halanced and should not exceed three
feet in any one location. The upslope or downslope facial angle of the
fan pad will not be changed from what presently exists. The approximate
overall grade of the fan pad is 8%, which will prevent any standing
water. Mirafi 600X and gravel will prevent any runoff from causing
erosion. The runoff from the pad will drain to a berm and the water run
through a silt fence or straw bales. Compaction of any minor amounts of
fill will be to 90X of standard Proctor density, ASTM Method D-698. Since
no ma,)or cut or fill will be carried out, post mining contour will be
essentially the same as presently exists.
