- ~ ~ Limited-Results Archaeological Survey Form (Page 2 of d)
Principal Meridian: 6th X NM Ute
NOTE: Only generalized subdivision ("quarter quarters") within each section is needed
` Township: 13S Range: 90W Sec.: 26 ''/<s NE Sw SE
Township: Range: Sec.: ''/<s ,
Township: Range: Sec.: ''/.s ,
Township: Range: Sec.: ''/.s
If section(s) is irregular, explain aligrunent method:
16. Total number of acres surveyed: approximately 140 acres
17. Comments: transects on steep, wooded hillsides were irregular and widely spaced
IV. ENVIRONMENT
18. General Topographic Setting: Block azea is located in the floor and on the slopes of a shoR
segment of Deep Creek and a tributary drainage to the west, including the steep south slopes of
West Flatiron.
Current Land Use: Public land - US Forest Service, Gunnison National Forest
19. Flora: Three general floral zones: (I) dense Gambel oak with brush (serviceberry,
chokecherry, hawthorne) understory on south facing slopes and open ridgetops; (2) open aspen-
sagebrush meadow in floor of tributary valley; and (3) spruce woodland with aspen and brush
understory on north facing slopes and along Deep Creek.
20. Soils/Geology: Soils are generally brown, medium fine sandy clay loams, with higher clay
and silt fractions on the valley floors. Soils are very shallow on the steep slopes and locally
deeper on terraces and colluvial fans in the drainage valleys. Massive sandstones and some
shales of the Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde Formation are exposed on the slopes, and many large
`°` boulders are exposed in the valley.
21. Ground Visibility: Surface visibility was generally fair to poor (10%-50%) and patchy.
Visibility was poorest in the spruce woodlands and denser meadows, and best along existing
trails and drainage channels.
22. Comments: overall surface visibility was poor, but few areas were observed that were
favorable for campsites or hunting stations.. This may also be an area of unpleasant cold air flow
in the winter.
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of File Search: ~ Colorado OAHP ~ Date: ~ 6 June 2001
24. Previous Survey Activity
In the project area: No previous surveys in immediate project area
in the general region: Several smal] block surveys and linear corridors in general
project area for core holes, access roads. stock ponds, and range improvement. There have also
been several historic structure and road improvement surveys along the North Fork Gunnison
River valley to the north.
