Limited-Results Archaeological Survey Form (Page 3 of 5)
25. Known Cultural Resources
! In the project area: none in immediate project area
In the general region (summarize): historic stock camps and a prehsitoric isolated find
have been recorded in the Minnesota Creek valley; mining and ranching related stmctrues and
features have been recorded along the North Fork Gunnison River; a number of prehistoric
resources have been recorded to the east around Coal Creek Mesa.
26. Expected Results: Some isolated historic ranching features were expected in this area, but
the potential for prehistoric resources was considered extretnely low
VI. STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
27. The objective of this inventory was to locate and evaluate any historic or prehsitoric
cultural resources within the identified block area that might be impacted by drilling activities
associated with the mine.
VII. FIELD METHODS
28. Definitions: Site: A discrete locus of patterned activity represented by ten or more
unpattemed artifacts of the same material, several distinguishable artifact types or materials, or
one or more artifacts in association with an interpretable cultural feature.
IF: an isolated cultural feature that cannot be meaningfully interpreted in the absence of
other associated cultural materials, or a small number of similar artifacts of the same material
~.,,;,, [hat have minimal interpretive value
- 29. Describe Survey Method: Level to moderately sloping valley floor and bench areas were
inspected by sinuous pedestrian transects at roughly 20 30 meter intervals, as vegetation and
rock outcrops allowed; steep, wooded slopes were inspected by irregular transects following
game trails along the contours.
VIII. RESULTS
30. List IFs if applicable. Indicate IF locations on the map completed for Part III.
A. Smithsonian Number: none Description:
B. Smithsonian Number: Description:
C. Using your professional knowledge of the region, why are there none or very limited
cultural remains in the project azea? Is there subsurface potential?
The steep slopes have few attractive resources and no favorable settings for campsites or hunting
stations. The only favorable location in the tributary valley floor was near a stock pond at the
western end of the survey block. Unlike nearby higher areas like West Flatiron and adjacent
ridges, there are sources of water and useful plants here. However, this appears to be an area of
cold air drainage. Other than the modem stock pond and ATV trail, no evidence of historic or
prehistoric activity was observed here.
