• f. Vegetation is very scant in the approximately 35 acre
portal and surface- plant area as designated on Map B. Presently
this area supports a few trees and shrubs and a little grass. Ter-
rain on both sides of the portal area has scattered evergreens and
oak brush and occasional clumps of grass.
g, Topsoil in the portal area is thin, if present at all. The
surface mantle [s an unsorted mixture of shale and sandstone with
minor amounts of organic matter, Such soils as may be recover-
able to the excavation work will be set aside and used to cover areas
that will be reseeded.
h. A discussion of the water resources and the hydrology of
. the mine property area [s discussed in an attached Exhlbtt H.
i. There are no slide areas in the property area which will
be affected by the underground mining operations, or by the initial
surface excavations in the portal and surface plant area.
j. Dumps of rock and mine debris will be effectively stabilized
as they grow in size by trucks and dozers that haul and doze the
material. Larger rock in the waste dumps will help stabilize the
finer material. Most of the excavation for the portal and surface
plant and the access roads will be in rocky terrain hence soil erosion
will be negligible, The h(gher terrain around the portal area will
afford some protection from winds that might stir up dust or blow
fine coal dust.
-14-
