• h. Solls on gently dissected upland areas are for the most
part sandy or silty, reflecting their Cliffhouse sandstone origin.
Evergreens, brush and scrub oak grow in this type of soil and tcr~ain.
When moisture is aclequate, grasses do well in open areas. Seedlings
of the trees are scarce, probably a result of the smothering ef-
fects of shrubs and other plants which grow and leaf close to the
ground. Gulley slopes have small accumulations of soil under
clefts and atop slopes of rock debris and detritus. Organically
rich soils are rare in any of the areas above the gullet's. Trees
and occasional clumps of grass grow on the steeper gullet' slopes,
and more abundantly on northfacing slopes where water is available
• up to early summer. Soils in the gullet' areas are more often ag-
gregates of fine shale, sandstone and some organic matter. Wedges
of soil up to two feet thick have been seen in undercut gullet' banks,
but these are areally quite small.
i. On the affected lands, evergreen and some brush and grass
endure. The inc[sed nature of the terrain plus the low precipitation
rate in recent years is resonsible for the sparse vegetation in the
area. The upper access road will be constructed on slopes and
benches supporting clumps of grass and brush, and a few generally
small trees.
5) The coal deposits are more or less tabular beds lying at
slightly inclined dips in most of the Applicants coal lands.
