INTER-0FFTCE CORRESPONDENCE
_~
Data 3/10192
R'a W. Agnew
Mgr of Environmental Quality
~onL W.S. Harding I~~
MSHACertfiedlmpoundme Inspector
Subject: STOCKWATER DAMS -TRAPPER MINE
Trapper Mine constructed a total of 13 stockwater ponds in the year of 1991. These ponds were scat-
tered throughout the reclaimed mined lands in Browning, Derringer, Enfield and Ashmore pits. The
drainages involved were East Buzzard (2), Upper Johnson (5), and Upper West No-Name with sbc
additional ponds.
All of these ponds are within the minimum design criteria for Soil Conservation Service ponds, i.e. side
slopes, top widths, free board, cut-off trench and upstream/dowrLStream slopes. All ponds meet the
criteria for the State Water Engineer. All livestock (US) ponds buiR in reconstructed drainage channels
• have adequate spillway designs to handle the historical runoff events in the vicinity. All US ponds buiR
within the contour ditch systems have adequate outlet d'RChes, as approved by the CMLRD, to safey
discharge any outflow.
I reviewed the 13 ponds sites October 15 through 18, 1991, with SCS personnel.
1) East Buzzard #1 is buiR at the end of reconstructed channel and empties via a spilMray into
1991 reconstructed drainage across B pd reclamation. The pond meets SCS standards and
spec'rfications.
2) East Buzzard #2 is a large (2,0 acre-foot) tank at the end of the 1991 reconstruction work. It
empties via a spillway into a temporary spoil channel until 1992 reclamation completes the East
Buzzard drainage reconstruction. The pond meets SCS standards and specs.
3) South D pit #1 is in 1991 reclamation at top of ridge and has a diversion ditch inlet and outlet.
The pond meets SCS criteria and the ditch meets CMLRD criteria
4) D ph #2 is in 1991 reclamation and placed on a diversion ditch. It met SCS criteria after minor
mod'rfications to the outlet ditch.
5) D pit #3 is in 1991 reclamation and placed on a diversion ditch near a small topsoil pile. It
meets SCS criteria.
6) Dpi[ #4 is whh 1991 reclamation and placed on a diversion ditch near the D pit electrical sub-
station. It met SCS criteria after minor outlet dl[ch modifications.
•_ ~ D pit #5 is within 1991 reclamation, is almost 2.0 acre-feet and was surrounded with topsoil
additions for mature shrub transplants. It met all SCS criteria.
