• The poisonous principle of four-wing saltbush is selenium. It is
considered a secondary or facultative absorber of this element.
Facultative absorbers are commonly the cause of stock poisoning. On
nonseleniferoua soils, this genus is palatable and a valuable forage
plant. Increasing selenium content tends to make a given species
increasingly unpalatable. The Edna Mine soils appear to be safe in
regards to selenium.
Growth of this shrub in sandy loam, loam and clay loam on gentle
and moderate slopes is good. On steep slopes, growth is poor. Erosion
control by this plant is medium. Establishment requirements are also
medium. The short term revegetation potential is low and the long term
is high. Fair cover is produced for game birds, small non-game birds
and small mammals. Elk and game birds receive fair food value from this
• shrub. Forage palatability for sheep is good and for cattle fair.
Energy and protein retention values are good.
CREEPING BARBERRY: MAHONIA REPENS LINDL.
This low-lying native shrub grows in dry-moist sites ranging from
5,500 to 10,700 feet. It is non-weedy and reproduces sexually and
vegetatively. It is a minor poisoner of livestock. Barberry's growth
in sandy loam, loam and clay loam on gentle and moderate slopes is good.
On steep slopes, growth is fair. Erosion control potential and
establishment requirements are both rated medium. Barberry is rated
medium in potential for both short and long term revegetation purposes.
Potential biomass production of this shrub is low. It is fair cover for
game birds and small mammals. Cover for small non-game birds is good.
• d
f
fi ld
i
f
i
l d
h
Foo
value
or all
ve classes of wi
l
fe is
a
r.
