• wildlife. Good food value is produced for elk, deer and small mammals.
Game birds and small non-game birds obtain fair food value from this
tree. Fair cattle and sheep forage palatability is also produced.
Energy and protein value retention is rated fair.
CLIFFROSE: COWAINIA MEXICANA DON.
This native shrub grows between 4,500 and 7,500 feet on dry sites
in Colorado. It reproduces sexually and is not poisonous or weedy. It
may be expected to provide fair to good cover for wildlife.
COMMON CHOXECHERRY: PRUNUS VIRGINIANA L.
• Chokecherry is a shrub-tree native found in dry moist and wet
habitats from 4,400 to 9,300 feet in Colorado. Reproduction occurs
sexually and vegetatively from suckers. This plant is not weedy, but is
considered a major poisoner of livestock.
The toxic principle of this plant is hydrogen cyanide (HCN).
Little free HCN is found in healthy, actively growing plants. In
natural circumstances hydrolysis of HCN is brought about by enzymatic
action in the plant or animal. Potential for poisoning is highly
variable. About 0.254 of an animal's weight to leaves is a normally
lethal amount. HCN content is greatest in young leaves.
FOURWING SALTBUSH: ATRIPLEX CANESCENS (PURSH) NUTT.
This native shrub reproduces sexually and is found in dry sites
• from 3,900 to 8,600 feet in Colorado. It is not considered weedy.
Four-wing saltbush is a minor poisoner of livestock.
Mid-term '94 4.4-A-25 September 15,1994
