Februarys 18, 1999
PO Box 2673 `~,~y
Durango, Colorado 81302 F~
e~y
Subject: Ormiston Point gravel pit reclamation
The following information is provided at your request in order to meet the reclamation plan
requirements of the "Colorado Mined Reclamation Act", and subsequent rules and regulations
of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for the Ormiston Point gravel pit.
The soil mapping unit at this location is: (862) Granath -Dolores - Fivepine complex, 0 to 15
percent slopes. The mapping unit description is enclosed. The soil at this site is most similar
to the Dolores soil.
A. INITIAL ERCAVATION AND TOPSOIIdNG
The topsoil shall be removed and stockpiled during excavation of gravel. When
stockpiled for an extended period of time, it shall be vegetated or mulched to prevent
erosion. Any runoff coming off of the mining site shall be diverted and collected in a
holding pond. Upon completion of mining activities, the topsoil shall be spread across
the disturbed area to a depth of 6 to 12 inches. After spreading, the topsoil shall be
graded so that it has a smooth fmish which blends in well with the surrounding area.
Finished slopes of 3:1 or flatter are desired, slopes shall not be steeper than 2:1. Rocks
and trash that will interfere with the seeding operation shall be removed. Topsoil shall
not be spread when frozen.
B. REVEGETATION
1. Seedbed Preparation - A clean, weed free seedbed shall be prepazed before any seeding
is done. If the topsoil has been compacted by heavy equipment being driven across the
area, especially when the soils were wet, a light disking or harrow operation shall be
done to break up the compacted soil. Any azeas adjacent to the mined azea which have
been disturbed by machinery shall be smoothed as needed and seeded to reestablish
permanent vegetation.
2. Planting Period -Planting should be done from August 1 until the ground is frozen or
covered with snow. Spring seeding should be completed before Apri130. Seeding
during these times will have the best opportunity for success. Seeding from May 1
until July 31, is discouraged due to high temperatures and low probability for adequate
moisture.
3: Fertilization -All seeded azeas should be fertilized to enhance grass establishment. The
fertilizer shall be incorporated into the soil during the fmal seedbed preparation. The
type and rate of fertilization will be in accordance with a soil test, and shall provide 40
pounds per acre of both nitrogen and phosphorus.
4. Seeding Operation -Where feasible, seed should be drilled with a grass drill. The drill
should be equipped with double disk openers, depth bands, press wheels, and an
agitator in the seed box. The use of a modified grain drill is acceptable. Broadcast
seeding is acceptable. When seeding by broadcast the seeding rates shall be doubled.
The Netund Reeaun:ee Comwedon 6endee wedu hend~n-hand wllh
the Amedcen people to eomem tuturd neawen on pdvete lends.
