The average frost <br />free season is 100 to 120 days. <br />Typically, the upper part of tt~e surface layer is dark grayish <br />brown clay laom about 5 inches thick. The lower part of the surface <br />layer is dark grayish brown silty clay about 8 inches thick. The <br />subsoil is gx•ay silty clay about 90 inches thick. The substratum is <br />gray calcareous silty clay to GO inches or Wore. Gleyed colors and <br />rrottles are conmon in the subsoil and substratum. <br />Included in this unit are small arms of Alarrpsa loam, Heldt <br />silty clay loam, Limon seeped please, and Sili clay loam. <br />Pexrneability is slow. Effective rooting depth is about 18 <br />inctxes. Available water capacity is high. Surface runoff is slow and <br />• erosion hazard is slight. This soil P,as a fluctuating water table <br />during most of the year and is subject w occasional flooding during the <br />spring and summer months. <br />The typifying pedon for the Big Blue series reported by the <br />Soil Conservation Service follows <br />Typical Pedon: Big Blue loam, grassland. (Colors are for dry <br />soil unless otherwise noted.) <br />All 0 to 10 inches, dark gray (10 YH 4/1) loam, black <br />(10 YH 2/1) ~roist; moderate very fine granular <br />structure; soft, very triable, slightly sticky and <br />slightly plastu:; calcareous; moderately alkaline; <br />clear srr~uth boundary.
