ALBERT
DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION SERVICE WALSENBURG,CO 81089
AGRICULTURE PH# (719) 738-1171
EXHIBIT B - SITE DESCRIPTION
Soils Information - Penrose-Minnequa complex, 2 to 15
percent slopes (65) is the primary soil type in the
proposed pit location. See attached map unit description
for detailed soils information.
Vegetative Information - This area is described
predominately as a limestone breaks range site. There is a
small amount of the Loamy Park range site intermingled.
The native potential plant community consists of Sideoats
grama, New Mexico feathergrass, Little bluestem, and
Galleta. Fortis and shrubs that would be present include
Indian paintbrush, Annual buckwheat, and Scarlet
globemallow as fortis and Walking stick cholla, Winterfat,
and Yucca as shrubs. These species usually make up a small
percentage of the potential plant community.
The vegetation currently on the site, where it has not been
disturbed, consists mostly of Blue grama and Red 3-awn.
Other Species occurring in lesser amounts are Ring muhly,
Indian ricegrass, Bottlebrush squirreltail and Broom
snakeweed. One seeded juniper also occupies the site in a
low-density scattered pattern.
Plant growth usually begins around May 1s` since warm season
grasses dominate site. Current live ground cover is sparse
and does not exceed 25°s. Current total annual production
is estimated at 400 lbs./ac of air dry forage.
Climatic Information - The climate is semi-arid. Winters
are cold, normally open with periodic snow accumulation and
melting. Summers are hot and dry with high intensity
thunderstorms. The annual precipitation averages 12 inches
of which 70 to 75o falls during May - October period. High
evapotranspiration losses limit effectiveness of summer
moisture. The frost-free period is normally from 150 to
170 days. The last frost generally occurs in the last wee}:
of April and the first frost occurs the first week of
October.
