SECTION 203
Excavation and Embankment
Description

203.01 This work shall consist of excavation, disposal, shaping or com-
paction of all material encountered within the limits of the work necessary
for the construction of the embankment in accordance with the specifications
and in reasonable close conformity with the lines, grades, and typical
cross sections shown on the plans or as staked by the Engineer. All
excavation will be classified, "Unclassified Excavation," as hereafter
described.
203.02 Unclassified Excavation
Unclassified excavation shall consist of the excavation of all materials
of whatever character required for the work, obtained within the slope
stakes, including surface boulders and excavation .f or ditches and channels.
203.03 Rock Excavation
Rock Excavation shall consist of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary
rock which cannot be excavated using a D9 with rippers.
203.04 Embankment Material
Embankment Material shall consist of approved material acquired from exca-
vations, hauled and placed in embankments in reasonable close conformity
with the line, grades, thicknesses and typical cross sections shown on
the plans or established.
The type of relative compaction required shall be as called for on the
plans or as designated.
When the source of embankment material is not designated on the plans,
approval of the source will be contingent on the material having a
maximum liquid limit of 45 and a maximum plasticity index of 20. Soils
excavated from the existing dam may be used for embankment material pro-
vided it is free from rubbish, coal waste, wood and other deleterious
substances.
203.05 Borrow
Borrow shall consist of approved material obtained from outside the slope
stakes, acquired for the construction of embankments or for other portions
of the work. Borrow shall consist of clays having a maximum liquid limit
of 45 and a maximum plasticity index of 20.
203.06 Geneial
The excavation and embankments for the dam shall be finished to reasonably
smooth and uniform surfaces. Variation from the finished grade shall not
be more than .08'. Materials shall not be wasted without permission of. the
