General Location and Project Description
The mine location is about 13 miles south of Meeker, Colorado in Leo Blanco County (see Index
Map -Exhibit B). The site is on a 6500 acre private ranch (R lazy J Ranch) belonging to James
Ritchie of Wenatchee, Washington. The land around the proposed mine site is currently used as
rangeland for cattle grazing. However, the moss rock occurs as a series of rock slides or steep
talus slopes that are unsuitable for grazing because they have no soi I or vegetative cover (see
photos submitted with 110 permit application, 1996). "fhc flagstone: occurs along nearly vertical
outcrops above the rock slides on 33° slopes where there is very little soil or vegetative cover.
Tlms, the removal of moss rock and flagstone from the slides and outcrops will have little impact
on current land use.
To access the site from Meeker, turn south off Highway 13 onto 10" Street; cross the White
River and turn right onto County Road ] 3; travel 9.3 miles on Road 13 to the R lazy J Ranch;
continue another 3.7 miles on Road l3 and hmi left onto atwo-trac:c dirt road; proceed through
the gate and follow the road about 0.85 miles to tl~e base of a large i ock slide. This slide and
several slides to the south were included in the first area proposed fir flagstone and moss rock
removal. Some moss rock removal was accomplished during the 1997 season (April to
2
