A discussion of topsoil suitability by class is provided for each soil series
or series variant. The mapping units contain various slope ar.d erosion phases
as well as complexes or associations of soil series phases and phases of series
variants. These mopping units are cl:rssi(ied in 'I':iblu i-1 rind h:iv~~ thr. gen~:rnl
suitability characteristics for the specific class or range of classes as
discussed in Section 7.1.1 through 7.1.4 below.
(1) Class 1
These soils are deep with fair to good suitability as a plant-growth medium.
Depth of topsoil available material ranges from 40 inches to about six feet.
Many of these soils have fine-loamy surface horizons which are rich in organic
• matter.
Class 1 soil series in the survey area are Colorow, Forelle, Kinnear, Potts,
Turley, 'Curley Variant and Yamac. These soils predominantly have sandy loam to
loam A horizons; sandy loam to clay loam R horizons, where applicable; and
calcareous mixed loamy C horizons. They are well-drained with medium runoff
and moderate to moderately rapid permeability. They are nonsaline and nonalkaline
to depths of three feet or more. Wind and water erosion hazard is moderate to
high. Tilth at optimum moisture is good to very good. The potential for compaction
is low to moderate. Soil structure has fair to very good stability against wet
slumping. Crusting potential of these soils upor, drying is low to moderate.
•
II.I-26
Revised 4/81
