TO: Bill Phillips
P.o. Box 364
Florence, CO 81226
As per your request, I have summarized into a narrative form my
observations of the site we visited.
SOILS: The landscape in this area is consistent with the soil mapping
units on the attached soils map. The soil mapping units for this area
are the 16 (Cj, Cascajo very gravelly sandy loam, 10 to 40 per cent
slopes), the 36 (FcC, Fort Collins loam, cool, 2 to 5 per cent slopes),
and the 52 (KC, Kim - Cascajo complex, 2 to 15 per cent slopes).
Investigating the site, soil material suitable for surface reclamation,
varied from a maximum of 4 feet on the south side of the area, to a
minimum of 6 inches or less, on the west side of the area. The 36 unit
(fort Collins loam) would be the best unit to obtain topsoil from. The
Kim component of the 52 (Kim - Cascajo complex) should also supply soil
material suitable for reclamation. Under this material is a thick
layer of well sorted sands and gravels. The Cascajo unit (16) and the
Cascajo component of the Kim - Cascajo complex are the source of the
gravel. All soil material for reconstruction should be removed and
stockpiled at another part of the site for future use. At the time of
reclamation, the site should be reshaped to at least a 3:1 slope,
preferably 6:1. After final grading, the subsoil material should be
scarified, or left rough. This will help bond the topsoil to it.
Evenly spread the topsoil material about 6 inches thick over the aYea
to be reclaimed. The prepared seed bed should be firm and free of
cobbles and stones. All operations should run on the contour to reduce
the chances of erosion. See the reclamation plan for more specifics.
VEGETATION: Current vegetation on the Loamy Foothill range site are as
follows.
GRASS AND GRASS-LIKE- blue Grama, red three-awn,
cheatgrass, ring muhly, and sand dropseed.
FORBS- buckwheat, hairy goldaster, yellow sweetclover,
scarlet globe mallow, curly cup gumweed, and groundsel.
SHRUBS AND SHRUB-LIKE- walkingstick cholla, fourwing
saltbush, plains pricklypear, and broom snakeweed.
TREES- None.
Current vegetation on the Gravel Breaks range site were
very similar with the addition of sideoats grama, Indian ricegrass, and
fringed sagebrush.
POTENTIAL VEGETATION: On the Loamy Foothill range site the potential
rimer, ,.,,....,.....:..._ ~..... •.., .. ~ ~ ~
percent forbs, and 5 to 10 percent shrubs. This site has a rolling
grassland aspect with mid-grasses dominating. Western wheatgrass, and
green needlegrass dominate the plant community.
