'The native vegetation is mainly grasses. =levation is
5,000 to 5,400 fee:. The average annual precipitation is 11 to 13
inches, the average annual air temperature is 50 to 5:: degrees F, and
the average frost-free period is 150 to 170 days.
Typically, the surface layer is very dark grayish brown very
gravelly sandy loam about 6 inches thick. The upper 15 ihches of the
substratum is extremely cobbly sandy loam. The lower part to a depth
of 60 or more inches is extremely cobbly sand. The soil has a high
content of secondary calcium carbonate between depths of 6 to 21
inches. The soil is moderately alkaline.
Included in this unit is about 10 percent Midway stony clay loam
and 5 percent Shingle very stony fine sandy loam on steep side slopes.
Midway soils are clayey and shallow to shale, and Shingle soils are
loamy and shallow to sandstone. Also included is about 5 percent deep
!Cim loam in drainageways.
?ermeability of this Cascajo soil is moderately rapid to rapid.
Available water capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 6C>
inches or more. Runoff is rapid to very rapid, and the hazard of
water erosion is high to very high.
This unit is used for rangeland.
The potential plant community on this unit is mainly sideoats
grama, blue grama, little bluestem, Indian ricegrass, and
needleandthread. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation
is about 750 pounds per acre. If the condition of the range
deteriorates, blue grama, red threeawn, ring muhly, and pricklypear
increase.
Range seeding is generally difficult. The main limitations for
seeding are steepness of slope, the high content of surface gravel,
and low available water capacity of the soils. Range seeding is
generally limited to broadcasting.
This unit is poorly suited to homesite development. It is limited
mainly by steepness of slope. If used as a septic tank absorption
field, the soils have poor filtering capacity.
This map unit is in capability subclass VIIs, nonirrigated. It is
in the Gravel Breaks iV64 range site.
