• Surface Water
The project area lies in two designated ground water management districts. The Kiowa
Bijou district overlies the northern portion of the project area. The ephemeral streams of
East Bijou Creek and Godfrey Gulch represent this district. The southern portion of the
area lies along Willow Creek, a tributary to the Big Sandy River within the Big Sandy
management district.
i s
•
Average rainfall is in the 10 to 12 inch per year range (Special Publication 53 (SP53)
Groundwater Atlas of Colorado, Colorado Geological Survey). Runoff is virtually nil
with an annual rate of 0 to .2 inch (SP53). There are a few surface water catchments for
cattle grazing purposes but there are no irrigated lands.
The Corp of Engineers has made a final ruling that none of the project area, except for a
very small area near Hwy. 86's junction with the UP rail line, will be jurisdictional waters
of the United States.
Ground Water
The project area lies along the far eastern edge of the Larimie -Fox Hills aquifer. The
aquifer lays 3 to 12 feet below the lowest lignite seam and will not be penetrated except
for sub - drilling necessary for the gamma -log probe. Ground water flow is unconfined
and generally away from and to the north (SP53) of the project area. There are no
irrigation wells in the project area due to the low production potential and low
transmissivity (SP53) from the Larimie -Fox Hills.
There are about a dozen stock tanks over the area fed by wind- powered pumps. From
local conversations, most of these appear to be above the Larimie -Fox Hills. Production
from these wells is sometimes intermittent and generally produces in the 2 to 8 gpm
range. There are vacated monitoring wells in Section 34 and Section 5 T8S R59W, but
their condition is unknown and no monitoring is taking place.
Soils:
Contact was made with the NRCS office in Simla, Colorado for assistance in describing
soils and vegetation in the project area Exhibit D . In addition, a more detailed study by
Elbert County, in conjunction with the US Department of Agriculture (Series 1960, No.
31), was performed and that mapping is reflected on Man 4 .
The higher south end of the project area is primarily Renhill Complex, a clay loam. As
you move northward, the soil transitions to a Boca Complex, loamy slopes, and at the
north end of the project becomes a Christian Clay soil type. No data has been gathered to
date by the project to identify soil horizon depths.
9 .
