..- .-
Because precipitation is not sufficient for annual croppin_, a cropping
system that includes small grain and stmner fallow is most suitable.
Tillage should be kept to a minimum. t411ntaining crop residue on or near
the surface reduces na~off, reduces soil blowing, and helps to maintain soil
tilth and organic matter content. Soil blowing can be reduced };,o planting
crops in alternate strips at right angles to the prevailing wir::..
This unit is well suited to irrigated crops. It may be li~~ited by
active channels. Eln-row, border, corrugation, and sprinkler irrigation
systems are suited to this unit. Location of channels may res~:-ict
irrigation methods. Irrigation water needs to be applied at a rste that
insures optimum production without increasing deep percolation, runoff, and
erosion. Fbr the efficient application and removal of irrigat_:,n water,
leveling is needed in sloping areas. Maintaining crop residue on or near
the surface reduces runoff, reduces soil blowing, and helps to raintain soil
tilth and organic matter content. Maintaining border scrips and restricting
machinery helps stabilize banks and channels. Crops respond to nitrogen and
phosphate fertilizer.
