_. ..
Windbreaks and environmental plantings are well suited to t:•i:: unit.
The main limitations are low precipitation, the hazard of soil ~=•:r,ring, and
occasional flooding. The hazard of soil blowing can be reducec1l^~•
cultivating only in the tree rows and by leaving a strip of vegetation
between the rows. Summer fallow, supplemental watering during r:;anting and
early stages of growth, and continued cultivation for weed cont_~1 are
needed to insure establishment and survival of seedling. Drip irrigation
systems speed growth, give better survival, and prolong windbre;.k Life.
Dikes and charnels that have outlets for flood water should be L:•_d to
protect windbreaks from flooding. Among the trees that are suicuule for
planting are Siberian elm, green ash, Russian-olive, eastern red•-~dar, and
ponderosa pine. Among the shrubs are lilac and Siberian peashn:L~.
This unit is unsuited to hcmesite development. The main li~:i~ation is
flooding.
This map unit is in capability subclasses IIe, irrigated, and Isle,
nonirrigated. The Satanta soil is in the Loamy Plains range site. The
Sampson soil is in the Overflow range site.

~r
