52.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SIIRFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
2.04.3 General Requirements: Site Description and Land Use Information.
(2) (a) (Cont'd,)
A few small undeveloped pastures and meadows are locat-
ed in the permit area (see Map 9A-1). Due to the short
growing season, these pastures historically have not
been utilized for hay production.
Though some small stands of aspen occur within the per-
mit area (see Map 9A-1), these stands are not presently
managed for the production of wood and wood products.
Some recreational use, hunting, and hiking in particu-
lar, occurs within the area, though the higher country
is usually preferred due to the diversity of environ-
mental features and recreational activities
(U.S.D.O.I., BLM, 1977).
A few summer homes, cow camps, and associated outbuild-
ings are located within the permit area (see Map 9-7).
The "Muckleville Restaurant" located in the NW 1/4 of
Sec. 13, T.13S., R.92W. of the 6th P.M., has been oper-
ated intermittently since its construction in 1980.
• Presently, the restaurant is closed, Steven's Gulch
Road (a County road to the Orchard Valley Mine guard
station) and several trails transect the permit area.
Many of these trails were originally constructed to ac-
cess coal exploration drilling sites and have either
been reclaimed or improved by the surface landowner.
Steven's Gulch Road was originally constructed to ac-
cess U. S.D.A., Forest Service lands north of the permit
area and was improved (paved) by CWI to the entrance to
the Orchard Valley Mine. The remainder of the road is
gravel surfaced and is maintained by the U.S.D.A., For-
est Service.
Pitkin Mesa Pipeline, a community domestic water sys-
tem, approximately parallels Steven's Gulch Road
through the permit area. CWI's powerline and water
pipeline originate at the Orchard Valley Mine site and
extend to the Steven's Gulch wellfield, Four alluvial
wells and a 500,000 gallon water storage tank shared by
Pitkin Mesa Pipeline Company and CWI are located at the
wellfield and are sources of CWI's water. The U.S.
Department of Energy, Western Area Power Administra-
tion's Curecanti-Hayden 230 KV transmission line bor-
ders the east permit area boundary. .
Revised 12/26/84
Added 12/26/84
Revised 10(12/86
Revised 10/01/87
3
