• The followirlq information was furnished by Soil Conservation Ser-
vice personnel Dennis Davidson, District Conservationist, and Alex
Parrot after a site visit on May 22, 1984.
Soils
The soils unit mapped at the project site is 22D. This mapping
unit consists of shallow, dark, loamy soils. They are gravelly
and cobbly on the surface and throughout the profile. These soils
occur on gently sloping to strongly sloping slopes. They have de-
veloped on gravelly and cobbly outwash materials. They take water
well, but have a limited water holding capacity because of the high
content of gravel and cobble.
Climatic Information
The elevation ranges from approximately 9,000 to 10,400 feet. The
annual precipitation averages between 12 to 17 inches. Minimal
• winter snow cover results in low available moisture for spring and
early summer growth of cool season plants. Rains during late July
and August appear norn~al for the Montane climatic zone. Optimum
growirlq season for native plants is 70 to 90 days with a mean annual
temperature of 37 to 40 degrees F.
Native Vegetation
Aspect of this site is a grassland. However, this becomes a shrub
annual grass aspect with a decline in range corxiition. Arizona
Fescue, Matt and Ring Mutely, Junegrass, Fringed Sage aryl Cinquefoil
are dominant on the site. Other grasses and forts include Bluegrass,
Perry Oat, Sedge, Snakeweed, Western Wheatgrass, Western Yarrow, arcl
Pinqua. Shrubs include Winterfat, low Rabbitbrush and shrubby Po-
tentilla. Native vegetation found at this site and estimated species
composition are:
Arizona Fescue 30% Cinquefoil 8% Western Wheatgrass 5%
Matt & Ring Mutely 15% Sedge 5% Perry Oat 2%
• Fringed Sage
Junegrass 15%
10% Snakeweed
Bluegrass 5% _
5% Total 100%
