Pristine Beauty and Uniqueness of Peck's Canyon and Proposal for Alternative Plan
* We strongly urge any members of the Pueblo County Planning and Zoning Commission who are decision
makers in this special use permit to come and walk the lands where the proposed mining would take place. We
feel this is necessary for you, the decision makers, to make an informed decision. No one who has been in these
canyons leaves unaffected. Many who walk the canyon and listen to the music of the waterfalls in harmony with
sounds of area wildlife, and who see the bouquets of white bride-like flowers cascading from the canyon walls,
call these canyons "spiritual". A place of unexplained peace and beauty - a place where any mining would utterly
shatter the lovely silence and disturb the delicate balance of the wetland foliage.
* We propose an alternative to mining this canyon and surrounding area that would fairly compensate all parties
involved. T7tis is a wonderfiil vision of a State of County Park where once astrip-mine might have been. It is
doable, with grant funds from GO Colorado or a similar organization, support from the county, agreement from
Mr. Mueller and a land donation by Red Creek Ranch. This plan has already been launched, with support from
Pueblo County, receptiveness at GO Colorado, a tentative commitment by Joe O'Brien at Red Creek Ranch to
donate hundreds of acres toward this end, and an agreement by homeowners to allow access to thew lands for
educational purposes (see Amendment 16). Both representatives at the State Land Board, the State Division of
Minerals and Geology, County Government Officials, City Planning Officials, and landowners feel that it is very
possible and doable to offer Mr. Mueller and Siloam Stone a fair amount to purchase the lease on the minerals
from the state, and to revert the lease to anon-development lease. We are working fervently toward this end,
and need only agreement and a price from Siloam Stone to get the wheels in motion. What a wonderful, happy,
win-win ending - a new pazk aad lands preserved, where all parties are fairly compensated. It is possible!
