Pi[ #2
Dear Mrs. Farnsworth.
I inspected the proposed site of gravel pit #.2 with you on October 11, 2001.
`°~u~a°o
3s.~tio~
N pp.tN
For l~/dlife-
F+~or People
The site is a previously disturbed floodplain area. The vegetation on site is made up of young narrow leaf
cottonwood trees interspersed with a stand of young willows. There is a very small stand of mature
willows in the middle of the site. The ground cover is mostly low mustard and cheat grass with a lot of
bare ground.
The impacts to wildlife, if this site is developed, will be minima(, There is evidence of deer and ell: use in
the azea. Deer use the area year round while elk use it during the Hinter months. Both species use it
mostly for hiding cover since there is very little palatable plants found on site. The site is not located
along a migration corridor. Song birds and small mammalc are also present. The mature willow stand
does meet the criteria for habitat of the endangered Southwest Willow Flycatcher but at this time of year
it is not possible to assess their use of the area.
Any water depletion of the North Fork River will have a possible effect on the endangered fishes found
downstream. lfany water depletion is anticipated you should contact the US Fish and W"ildlife Service in
order to assess the impacts caused by the depletion.
If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,

Kirk Madariaga
District Wildlife Manager - Paonia
cc: J.
