In October of 2001, the District Wildlife Manager, Kirk Madariaga met with the landowner to visit
the area for the new gravel extraction. The letter from Madariaga describing the minimal impacts of
the proposed operation is enclosed in this section.
In addition to the items discussed, it will be important to ensure that the short bridge used to trans-
port the material from the proposed pit to the River Bottom Pit processing azea is sound and that no
disturbance to flows occurs. Also, the bridge (span of 75 feet and height of 7 feet) will avoid sedi-
ment impacts that a low water crossing would have in this azea. No trout migrations or other issues
with native fish should arise from this solution to the river crossing. It is a higher cost option for
United but a better environmental solution. At the end of mining, the bridge would be removed. The
entire bridge crossing will be reviewed by the COE for their approval.
Overall, we believe the reclaimed site will be significantly better for wildlife than the current site
North Fork Pit March 04 14
