Page 2 - Mr. Mack Graham

site carefully read and record the flows at various times throughout
the irrigation season,
For the South Branch of St. Vrain Creek we would recommend
installing two 5' X 30" Parshall flumes, one near the upstreaR (west)
WPCC property line, and one near the downstream (east) property line.
To adequately assess seepage losses in this reach, it will also be
necessary to have a measuring flume on each of the ditches which
• divert from the South Branch within this reach, The above described
flumes on the Clough and True would be adequate for that ditch, and
~el.rG rJ Pr. y.t] r:
the tname unknown drtch which diverts just above the east property
line already has an adequate flume in it, Chuck Atkins indicated
the other day that he now has two flumes which he will install in the
Goss #1 and Goss #2 ditches. Al] of these flumes will be required to
determine the seepage losses.
The 5' X 30" flumes for the South Branch are also stock items at
Thompson Pipe and Steel Company, and cost $760 each. Because the
South Branch is a live stream throughout the year and is subje:et to
flash flooding at times, we would recommend that these flumes be
~~ installed with concrete bases and wing walls. I have enclosed a rough
sketch showing a similar flume installation which will give you an
idea of what is needed as far as concrete work, etc. 1 have estimated
that each flume would require placement of about 3 c,y, of concrete
and would require about 35 l,f. of 4 X 4 timbers, some miscel~aneous
reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, and riprap. The earthwork r~:quired
to divert the stream around the flume area during construction could
be done with the backhoe now at the site. Since you indicated that
you will have a construction crew at the site doing same concrete
work later this month, I will leave it to you to assess the cost of •
this work.
As with the Clough and True ditch, we could not recommend putting
recorders on these flumes. To obtain continuous loss data over extended
periods of time, it would be necessary to put recorders on the two
