Pigc 3 - Mr. Mack Graham
flumes on the South Branch and on each of the ditches mentionej above.
The cost of this is probably not justified, since again, careful
reading and recording of flows by someone at the site at various times
during the summer will provide adequate data for our purposes.
We discussed briefly the possibility of establishing two rated
sections on the South Branch rather than installing the above discussed
Parshall flumes. We decided against recommending this for several
reasons. First, rating these sections would require several trips to
the site by our office to make current meter measurements, and the
cost of this could amount to over half the cost of the flumes. Second,
the concrete section at the upstream end of the South Branch is not
suitable for rating, so some other section would have to be rated. A
flash flood or other high flow might alter the cross section and require
rc-rating the section. Third, Parshall flume measurements would gen- ~
er~liy be more accurate than rated section measurements, and would i
provide much better evidence should it ever be needed in court. If i
you would stiil iike to consider the rated-section alternate, we could
discuss it further.
For your information, I have enclosed a Thompson Parshall flume
catalog. Let me know how you would like to proceed as early eis possible
so that we can order the flumes, revise the installation plans:, etc. as
necessary.
Very truly yours,
W.
