July 1993 <br />5.3.6 Wetlands <br />-30- <br />923-2515 <br />A narrow band of wetlands occurs continuously along Armand Draw in saturated soils (Figure <br />2). These wetlands aze typical of the: herbaceous wetlands along Grassy Creek as described in <br />Section 5.1.6. These wetlands are not managed differently from the surrounding native <br />rangeland. They have not been seeded or enhanced with cultivazs and are not cropped for hay. <br />They aze not recognized as a special unit. <br />5.3.7 Native Ran eg lands <br />Native rangeland occurs extensively in the upper reaches of Armand Draw and as isolated pazcels <br />amid the dryland agricultural fields in the lower reaches. They aze similar to the native <br />rangeland along Grassy Creek as described in Section 5.1.7. These rangelands aze in the <br />mountain Swale, brushy loam, claypan, and aspen woodland range sites, as described in Sections <br />5.1.7 and 5.2.7. <br />5.3.8 Drvland Agriculture <br />The dryland agricultural fields in the middle Armand Draw grown on highly erodible soils were <br />retired from crop production in 1989 and placed in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). <br />The five year (1981-1985) mean yield, prior to retirement, was 32 bushels per acre for wheat, <br />36 bushels per acre for barley, and 30 bushels per acre for oats (Daughenbaugh 1992). The <br />dryland agricultural fields located in lower Armand Draw and Scotchmans Draw had a 5 year <br />(1981-1985) mean yield of 28 bushels per acre of wheat, and 37 bushels per acre of bazley <br />(Daughenbaugh 1992). In 1987 fields on highly erodible soils were retired to CRP. Fields still <br />in crop production along Scotchmans Gulch and Armand Draw have average yields of 26 bushels <br />per acre for wheat and 32 bushels per acre for bazley. According to the ASCS, the Routt <br />County averages for 1992 (Daughenbaugh 1992) are 24.7 bushels per acre for wheat, 37.4 <br />bushels per acre for barley, and 36.9 bushels per acre for oats.
