__ • July 1993 -29- 923-2515
5.3.5 potential Flood Irrig~ed Areas
Soils: Major soils on the alluvial materials along Armand Draw include the Routt loam,
Spicerton fine sandy loam, Zoltay Variant loam, Coutis fine sandy loam, and Foidel loam
(Figure 3). The Spicerton fine sandy loam as discussed in Section 5.1.5 is not irrigable.
The Routt loam is a deep, well-drained soil on benches and mountain slopes formed in loess,
colluvium, and residuum. Permeability of the Routt loam is very low, available water capacity
high, and runoff medium. The effective rooting depth of plants is 60 inches or more. This soil
is not irrigable due to its very low permeability and steep slopes (15-25%).
The Zoltay Variant loam is a deep, moderately well-drained soil which occurs on stream terraces
and alluvial fans. This soil has inclusions with a seasonal high water table above 30 inches.
•~ The depth to water in May and June ranges from 30-50 inches. Permeability of the Zoltay
Variant loam is very low, available water capacity is high, and runoff is low. The effective
rooting depth of plants is 60 inches or more. This soil is not irrigable because of its very low
permeability.
The Coutis fine sandy loam as discussed in Section 5.1.5 and the Spicerton Variant fine sandy
loam as discussed in Section 5.2.5 are not irrigable. The Foidel loam because of the steep slope
(15-25%) in sites of occurrence is not irrigable.
Water Availability and Quality: Armand Draw does not have adequate water supply for flood
irrigation. The small amount of water that is available is of a low to poor quality for hay and
pasture crop production.
Summary: There aze no potential sites for flood irrigation along Armand Draw because there
• aze no irrigable soils and there is not an adequate volume of water. Furthermore, the water that
is available is of a low to poor quality for crop production.
_ Golder Associates
