u
the relative abundance of exposed hearths similar to those found on 5RB 1042 in
the region suggest that the site is not eligible to the National Register of
Historic Places. Judging from the nature of the oxidized sandstone
concentrations, it seems likely that the site has deflated considerably,
probably destroying the integrity of the firehearths.
Site 5RB 1044 represents an open, prehistoric campsite, located on slickrock
exposed among sagebrush-covered ridges. Observed on the site were two manos,
one flake, and firehearths. Two firehearths can definitely be identified, and
two others may be present. The hearth areas consist of oxidized sandstone
cobbles. This site is not considered eligible to the National Register of
Historic Places. The presence of exposed sandstone slickrock on the site
strongly suggests that cultural deposits are aurficial. F4irthermore, the
paucity of artifacts and lack of diagnostic artifacts on the site implies that
little can be determined of the site's cultural affiliation or the technology
and subsistence systems of its inhabitants.
This site consists of a possible hearth and a small, sparse scatter of chipped
stone artifacts, located atop a ridge. The possible hearth area is defined by a
concentration of oxidized sandstone cobbles. Nine flakes were discovered on the
site. Site 5RB 1047 is not considered eligible for nomination to the National
Register of Historic Places. The limited horizontal extent of the site, the few
numbers of artifacts found on the site, and the absence of diagnostic artifacts
U suggest that the site is not unlike many other sites in the region, and is
unlikely to yield nex, significant archaeological data.
Site 5RB 1048 may possibly represent past human activity. Present on the site
is an area of oxidized sandstone, in an area 45 cm x 25 cm, located beneath a
small sandstoneockshelter. No artifacts were discovered. The lack of cultural
material on this site suggests that it is ineligible for nomination to the
National Register of Historic Places, as it appears unlikely that the cultural
affiliation or function of the site can be determined.
This site represents recent, Euro-American activity. The site consists of a
shallow sandstone overhang, under which was found historic artifacts post-dating
the Second World War. A section of the back wall of the overhang has been
oxidized, possibly indicating the presence of a firehearth within the shelter.
Site 5RB 1050 is not considered eligible to the National Register of Historic
Places. The recent age of the artifacts and indications that the site was
utilized only for a brief period of time (probably for recreational purposes)
render this site unimportant.
Site 5RB 1051 is located
burned area measuring 60
is ocidized. No artifac
the possibility that the
suggest that the site is
Historic Places.
at the base of a sandstone outcrop. Present is a
cm x 70 cm; the cliff face adjacent to the burned area
is are present. The lack of artifacts on the site and
burned area mey have been produced by natural causes
not eligible for nomination to the National Register of
0 This site is located on the eastern slope of a ridge. Observed on the site was
a dense concentration of eighteen chipped stone artifacts in an area measuring
10-80 11
